Bold Blooms
With Wayne, florist and owner of The Flower Room, King St Newtown
Tucked into the rhythm of King Street for more than 15 years, The Flower Room has become a quiet favourite for those who love colour, creativity and something a little different. At the centre of it all is florist Wayne, who has shaped the store to reflect the spirit of Newtown. It is vibrant, grounded and full of individuality.
Wayne and his team design flowers for all kinds of moments. Gifts, weddings, celebrations, farewells and spontaneous joy. Whether it is a single striking stem or a full event arrangement, everything is built with thought and personality. “We do what works best for us and keep to our ethos of creating something alternative,” he says.
It is a natural fit for the neighbourhood. “Newtown has such a creative and down-to-earth vibe,” Wayne says. “So I’ve shaped the florist to feel welcoming, personal and a bit different. Just like the people who live here.”
The Flower Room is known for bold colour choices and sculptural shapes. “Seasonal vibrant and unconventional colour palettes and asymmetrical arrangements really suit Newtown,” Wayne says. “They reflect the suburb’s artistic soul, bold energy and love for individuality.”
Wayne has seen the neighbourhood shift over the years but says the deeper spirit has not changed.
“Behind the quirky shopfronts and street art, there is a real warmth. Locals support each other and small businesses feel like family.”
There is real camaraderie in the precinct too. “We have always had a great time chatting to Rising Sun Workshop. We have followed their journey since the start and are thankful for their support.”
Wayne’s ideal Newtown day includes a matcha from Shenkin, a pastry from Sweet Lu and some fried chicken from Clem’s. These quiet rituals are part of his connection to the place he has long called home.
The Flower Room continues to offer something simple and striking. A neighbourhood florist with an artist’s edge and a local heart.
