Rising Sun Workshop Revs Up Live Music With Nick Smith of Rising Sun Workshop

In a neighbourhood where self-expression is expected, Rising Sun Workshop has always been a unique blend of passion and practicality. Part communal DIY motorcycle workshop, part renowned 90-seat restaurant known for its exceptional ramen, it stands as a perfect reflection of Newtown’s unconventional spirit.

This year, the Workshop has doubled down on its commitment to cultural stewardship. With support from the NSW Government, the space has been expertly adapted to host live music. The transformation is serious: featuring a dedicated stage, professional acoustic treatments, and top-notch audio-visual equipment.

This investment creates a critical new platform for artists in the precinct - a safe, high-quality stage for emerging local acts to gain essential practice and exposure. The team is already seeing huge demand, with sell-out nights featuring vibrant genres like New Orleans jazz and soul, injecting new creative energy into the local scene.

Rising Sun Workshop’s commitment to an uninterrupted cultural experience extends to the dining table. Their unique monthly live music Sundays are paired with a casual yum cha service. This intentional service model means guests can easily watch and eat without the disruption of constant table service, allowing them to focus entirely on the act.

By providing a home for both mechanical mastery and musical artistry, the team actively demonstrates the link between culture, community, and economy. They are actively investing in the ecosystem that keeps Newtown vibrant, welcoming, and creative.
