Inner West African

With Adetokunboh Adeniyi, owner of A Little Lagos, Enmore Road

There’s always something happening at Little Lagos. The laughter spills out onto Enmore Road, the Afrobeat rhythms pulse through the evening air, and the colours, flavours and warmth of West Africa come alive in the heart of Newtown. This is not just dinner, it’s a full cultural experience, crafted by founder Adetokunboh “Toks” Adeniyi to feel like home.

When Little Lagos opened its doors in 2020, it brought something new to the Inner West, authentic Nigerian food, vibrant cocktails and a space that doubles as a creative hub for the African diaspora. “There was never any doubt about opening in Newtown,” Toks says. “It’s diverse, friendly and has a real appreciation for food, music and culture. It just felt right.”

Before finding its permanent home, Little Lagos ran as a pop-up inside Earl’s Juke Joint, quickly earning a loyal following. “Newtown is just so cool,” Toks says. “Our tagline is ‘come home’ because that’s how we see it. Every guest is a friend, we feed them, laugh with them and make sure they have the best time.”

Inside, the atmosphere is alive with creativity. Art installations and exhibitions showcase African artists, while live music and community events bring people together from across the city. The monthly Afro-Caribbean Block Party has become a local highlight, celebrating food, culture and rhythm with dishes straight from Nigeria and the Caribbean.

Support from neighbouring businesses has been central to the journey, with mates from The Trocadero Room, Magpie Enmore, Palomino Lounge, Rising Sun Workshop, Young Henrys and Italian Bowl all lending a hand along the way. “Everyone looks out for each other here,” Toks says. “That’s the magic of Newtown.” Sharing Nigerian food and culture in this neighbourhood has been deeply meaningful for Toks.

“It’s an honour to represent my heritage and see it so warmly embraced. For many people, it’s their first experience of West Africa, and the locals have shown nothing but love.”

Little Lagos captures the spirit of Enmore perfectly, energetic, creative and open to everyone. It’s the kind of place that feeds both the belly and the soul.
