The Heart of Erko

With Tara Byrne, owner of Fleetwood Macchiato, Erskineville Road.

On Erskineville Road, Fleetwood Macchiato feels like one of those places that’s always been there, and for good reason. Fourteen years in, it stands as one of the originals. A café that hasn’t just watched the street evolve, but helped shape its rhythm.

Run by owner Tara, Fleetwood is built on a simple but uncompromising approach. Everything is made from scratch. From the soft drinks to the pickles, relishes and the dishes themselves, it all happens in-house. It’s a level of care that shows up in every bite and every cup.

“We make everything from scratch… all of our soft drinks, pickles, relishes, everything that goes into our food,” Tara says.

The coffee, as expected, is excellent. So good, in fact, I completely forgot to take a photo of it. Instead, I found myself deep in conversation with Tara over a seriously good chicken sandwich and a slice of their orange and thyme cake. The kind of place where you come for one thing and end up staying longer than planned.

Fleetwood is more than a café. It’s part of the fabric of Erskineville. Tara describes the area in one word: community. It’s a sentiment that runs through everything here, from the regulars at the counter to the creatives working just upstairs.

We headed up to meet some of the signwriters above the café, including Ann Woo from Love is a Sign, part of a broader network of makers and creatives that give the space its character. The now-iconic “I Love Erko” work comes from just upstairs, a reflection of the tight-knit, proudly local energy that defines the strip.

Back downstairs, the café hums. Locals filtering in, takeaway coffees flying out, tables turning over with people catching up, working or just taking a moment. It’s vibrant without being overwhelming. Familiar without ever feeling stale.

There’s a confidence in what Fleetwood does. No shortcuts, no chasing trends, just consistently good food, great coffee and a genuine connection to the people around it. A place that feels lived in, loved, and essential.

We love Erko. And places like Fleetwood are exactly why.
