Cuts, Colour & Community
With Danielle, co-owner of Audrey & Him, Australia Street, Newtown.
Tucked along Australia Street, Audrey & Him feels like one of those spaces that’s always been part of the neighbourhood. The kind of salon where people don’t just come for a cut, they come to reset, catch up, and walk out feeling fresh.
I sat down with Danielle, co-owner of the salon, to talk through what makes the place tick. “We’ve had this space for nine years this year… but it’s been a salon for twenty-five to thirty years,” she says.
That history shows. It’s not about chasing trends, it’s about knowing your craft and doing it well. The team are all-rounders, moving between cuts, colour and everything in between without missing a beat.
“We do a variety of everything… from foiling, balayage, freehand work, all the way to expressive creative cuts, shag cuts, wolf cuts, sharp bobs and just your classic trims.”
There’s range to what they do. Big shifts sit alongside the everyday. Long hair into a pixie, dark tones lifted into bright blonde, or just a solid clean-up before heading back out into the world. It’s all part of the offering.
The way the salon runs goes deeper than what happens in the chair. Audrey & Him is part of Sustainable Salons, a program that recycles the majority of its waste, from colour through to the hair itself.
“We recycle about ninety to ninety-five percent of all our materials… even the hair on the floor gets repurposed for environmental use.”
The products follow the same thinking. Evo sits at the centre of the salon, paired with Hubba colour, an ammonia-free range made in Australia. Clean, reliable, and aligned with how they want to operate.
Then there’s the people. Clients travel from across Sydney, from the mountains through to the north side, but it’s the locals who give the place its feel. People dropping in, waving through the window, coming back again and again.
Danielle sums Newtown up in one word: creative. It’s in how people dress, how they show up, what they do. Australia Street carries that same energy in its own way. A strip full of personality, where everyone has something going on.
Audrey & Him sits right in the middle of it. A salon built on skill, good people, and a steady stream of fresh cuts walking back out onto the street.
