Serving the People
Newtown’s locally owned brewery and tasting bar
By the time most of us heard of Young Henrys, it was already a fixture. But back in 2012, it started with a simple idea: make beer that locals would be proud to call their own.
Newtown had always been a place for independent minds and big ideas, so it made sense that a brewery like Young Henrys would be born here. Founded by Richard Adamson and Oscar McMahon, it came from a shared frustration that the Australian beer scene had become too predictable. Richard brought the brewing experience, Oscar brought the hospitality know-how, and together they built a place that poured something different - beer that felt like Newtown in a can.
Set up in a modest warehouse, Young Henrys quickly found its rhythm. Locals dropped by for a fresh pour. Bands started playing. Collabs took off. A brewery turned into a creative engine, pushing out beers as diverse as the suburb itself. From experimental brews featuring native ingredients to special releases with iconic bands, artists and coffee roasters, every can tells a story.
What’s remarkable is that the original ethos still holds. Young Henrys remains independent and deeply rooted in its community. Their Classic range pays tribute to the pub staples we grew up with, while the Brewers B-sides let the team colour outside the lines with beers that are bold, seasonal and sometimes a little cheeky.
You will see their beers across the country now, but the soul of Young Henrys is still in Newtown - on the taps, in the crowd, and on the streets where it all began. It is the kind of place that reminds you that great ideas don’t always need polish. They just need the right people, a bit of rebellion, and something worth raising a glass to.
