Where Newtown Comes Alive
With Beau Neilson, The Vanguard, King Street Newtown
The Vanguard has been part of Newtown’s heartbeat for over 20 years. Tucked among the colourful stretch of King Street North, this boutique live music and burlesque venue is known for its intimate shows, exceptional sound and the sense of fun that comes with every performance.
For owner Beau Neilson, The Vanguard is all about connection. “We bring people together through music, self-expression and a good time,” she says. Whether it is folk, jazz, rock or electronic, the venue offers a stage for both local and international talent, always with the kind of relaxed welcome that feels right at home in Newtown.
Diversity is at the heart of the Vanguard’s programming. One night might see a packed house for a jazz dinner show, the next could be a late-night dance session. “Each show responds to a different scene,” Beau says. “It makes our venue really special. We honour those unique audiences and the energy they bring.”
This year, The Vanguard is stepping into even later nights with the launch of Soap Opera, a new late-night series running until 3 a.m. A rolling cast of DJs will keep the energy high, celebrating the unexpected drama and joy that unfold when music, creativity and a little Newtown magic mix.
Beau is quick to credit the resilience of Newtown’s broader community too. “Despite COVID and the lockout laws, Newtown has kept its energy. The community spirit here allowed the area to keep thriving while others struggled.”
The collaborative nature of Newtown’s venues also plays a role. “It is not about competition here. Venues support each other and build something bigger together.”
Beau’s favourite Newtown ritual is simple: a stroll down King Street, a drink at The Vanguard, and the feeling that there is always something new to discover just around the corner.
The Vanguard reflects the best of Newtown: welcoming, eclectic and always alive with possibility.
