A Local Favourite
With Leigh Crawley, General Manager at The Erko, Erskineville
Since 1882, The Erko has been part of Erskineville’s story. Through generations of change, it has always stayed true to its core. A place where locals meet, where dogs are as welcome as their humans, and where community spirit fills every corner.
Under the guidance of General Manager Leigh Crawley, The Erko has spent the last year listening to its regulars, fine-tuning the food, drink and experience to feel even more like home. “The inner west locals are our bloodline,” Leigh says. “What we do reflects the community that walks through our doors.”
Today, The Erko offers a balance of classic pub atmosphere with a fresh, easygoing style. The kitchen focuses on local produce and elevated pub favourites, and the taps pour a mix of local craft and classic brews. Free trivia, pool, raffles and bingo nights keep the regulars coming back, while daily specials make sure everyone can feel part of it.
Dogs are part of the family too. “You can bring your dog inside, grab a pint, and feel at home,” Leigh says. The Erko even keeps a photo wall of its four-legged regulars.
Giving back has always been part of The Erko’s DNA. The pub works closely with Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and local breweries like Young Henrys and Grifter to raise funds for community causes. “Teaming up with local businesses is what helps keep the spirit of Erskineville alive,” Leigh says.
In the kitchen, new head chef Christi is bringing her own twist to the menu. Growing up in the Philippines and working in community health before hospitality, Christi blends fresh ideas with the heart of classic pub food. The new autumn menu reflects that balance — fresh, bold and comforting.
A sunny afternoon in Camperdown Park with takeaway from the Erko Deli, a pint and a laugh with mates — it is the small rituals that keep the Erskineville spirit strong.
At The Erko, it is about good food, cold beer, warm welcomes and a genuine connection to the people who call this neighbourhood home.
